It's been hell today. I spent all day running
around trying to find a bank to deposit the check in. My credit card
(which I've been living off for the past two years) only goes up to $2000, and
I had a $4500 check. I needed to open a new account. I figured Royal
bank would be good, as that's where the check was made so it should go
through right way. Eventually after about an hours walking downtown to find a Royal,
I go in and ask about getting a new account.
"Do you have an existing account with us?" the
receptionist asked.
I said "I used to, but I'm sure it's closed now because
I haven't used it for years."
She asked if I had the old card, fortunately I did, and
I gave it to her.
"It says here you owe money for a student
loan?".
I disagreed stating, "Uhh, no. I paid that
off already."
"Well it says here that you still owe $375" she says with a smirk.
"WHAT?!"
After waiting to speak with someone who claimed they could help me, all
I was told was that I had to resolve the issue with the branch that I got the
loan from.
“That’s about 2 hours bus ride from here” I said but got
nothing else in return. So off to my old branch I go. Keep in mind, I
have no car during this time, and I did try opening an account with the Bank of
Montreal, but all I got was
"You'll have to make an appointment."
And I
don't even know if they have TD in NB. So finally, after missing my stops
on the subway, and getting off because there was something wrong with the
train, I got to my branch at Markham and Lawrence. They rejected me for no
reason. I left, knowing that I would have to call the student loan office
and/or the collection agency, it ended up that NO MATTER WHAT, I couldn't
re-open my account because of my poor student loan credit history. And I am
standing here with almost $5,000 in my hand!!! My only option then was to
head to my Canada Trust bank
back 2 hours from whence I came. Finally, after 4 banks and 4 hours I get
someone who could actually help me. She did things to get the ball
rolling, and even made some exceptions to the rule so that I could have a new
account, and pay off the debts to my master card. But just as things are
starting to clear up, the fire alarm goes off…
"Hurry uuuup!" I thought as she typed in my information.
But when she realized the check was from NB, there was
noting she could immediately do about getting it to go through. I'd still
have to wait 3-5 days. Now I was upset. It was 3:30 at this point and I
planned on being home by at least 4:00. So off to home I go, when I
realized I was 20 cents short of bus fare. NOOOOO!!!!
I tried calling my dad to pick me up, but no answer. I then thought, I
could have him paged, but remembered he couldn’t call me back. And what
if he can't get me anyway. Plus, I'd be an extra 25 cents short for the phone
call. So I figured I'd walk around the mall, looking for whatever change
I could find on the floor. I had no choice. I could've walked home
at that point, but I wouldn’t have gotten home in time for the ride to the
airport. So as I walked with my eyes to the ground and the fire alarm still
blasting, I heard a voice say "Russell Challenger?"
The alarm stopped, and I looked up, and standing there was a
really old friend. He was dirty and older than I remembered him, but the most
important thing on my mind was "do you have 20 cents?" He did,
and now I'm home.
